CHOICE Review

Natural gas is an important fuel drawn from geological formations. This book gives a quick survey of the sources of natural gas in the US and worldwide. The physical properties of the mixtures called ``natural gas'' are reviewed and the equations of state used to correlate its properties are discussed. The flow of gas in geological reservoir formations, the performance of gas transport piping, compression, gas production system analysis, and flow measurements are topics here presented. Natural gas often occurs with liquid petroleum components; consequently, there is some discussion of the design of well-production strategies and methods for stripping liquid components from the raw gas. The gas-producing formations are usually flooded with brine and often contain carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. This sour gas leads to corrosion problems and procedures for dealing with them are discussed. Such a wide range of topics cannot be covered in detail in this small book but citations to source literature will help the reader. This is a ``how to compute'' book; those who want to understand the theory of the methods presented will have to go elsewhere, but this is a good reference for anyone interested in gas production and should be in college science and technology collections.-T.S. Storvick, University of Missouri, Columbia
