He has undertaken several field research projects in various parts of east and central Africa, from which his principal books include: Survey of the Turkana (1951); The Family Herds(1955); Land Tenure and Social Change among the Nyakyusa (1958); Social Control in an African Society (1963), and Neighbours and Networks (1971). In the field of law and society, he has published a theoretical work, Disputes and Negotiations (1979). He has also edited symposia: The Family Estate in Africa (1964), Tradition and Transition in East Africa (1970), and Cross - examinations: Essays in Honour of Max Gluckman (1978). His recent field research involved a detailed investigation of the socio-history of a rural area in southeastern Ireland)
